Sheen Hok Amblyopia Project: Helping children see the world

Since 2005, Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation has been providing underprivileged children in China with free medical treatments for Amblyopia, a sight disorder best treated in early childhood.

Amblyopia is a common disease among children. In China alone, about 12.5 millions of children are suffering from weak-sightedness. Children with Amblyopia are proven to have a weak eyesight between 0.1 and 0.3 and the best treatment period is from 3 to 8 years old. If a treatment is done after the age of 8, the restoration will be very slow. It is useless to do a treatment after the age of 12.

Our targeted children are mostly from underprivileged families which have to go through a strict financial assessment in order to be qualified as a beneficiary of this medical project. The treatment usually lasts for 9-24 months or it could be a one-off surgery (depending on the situation). It helps to restore the children’s eyesight to a normal rate of 0.7 to 1.5. The cost for each child ranges from HK$3,800 to HK$6,000 which covers the treatment, special medical device and eyeglasses, transportation and food allowance. For children living in remote areas, local volunteers will arrange home-stay near to the hospital for them and their mothers or grandmothers in order for them to live a normal life during the treatment period.

Over the years, we have collaborated with a number of qualified hospitals, offered training to 200 medical staff and provided free medical treatments to improve the eyesight of over 3,000 children in Chengdu, Inner Mongolia, Nanning, Haikou, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Handan and Vietnam as highlighted below.
