Caring for the Elderly

Professor Alice Chiu was the Chairperson of the Social Services team of Yan Chai Hospital in 1984. She helped establish a place for the elderly in need of care, namely Yan Chai Hospital Mrs Kwok Yuk Cheung Care and Attention Home (Hong Kong).

In 1987, Prof. Chiu was appointed Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Yan Chai Hospital. That year she successfully applied to the Hong Kong Government for land to build an elderly care residential home. Also in 1987, Prof. Chiu made a donation for Yan Chai Hospital Mrs Tsang Wing Neighbourhood Elderly Centre (Hong Kong), aiming to provide services for the elderly in Tuen Mun. The Centre was the first of its kind by transforming a neighborhood centre to the elderly day care in Hong Kong. Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation also made donations for buying physical therapy equipment. Nowadays, the Centre has more than 1,300 elderly members.

In addition, Prof. Chiu set up ELCHK Sheen Hok Charitable Foundation Kwan Shon Hing Yu Chiu Neighbourhood Elderly Centre to commemorate her late mother in law. Located in Yu Chui Court in Shatin, the centre provides comprehensive and diversified services for the elderly and the community in the district to meet the health, psychological and social needs of the elderly. The facility also helps them lead a healthy, respectful and dignified life, encourage their active participation in the community and and promote a caring community in the Shatin district.
